WELS ALS TAAL<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Wels, ook wel \u201cCymraeg\u201d of \u201cy Gymraeg\u201d genoemd, is een van de laatste levende Keltische talen. Slechts 700 duizend mensen herkennen Wels als moedertaal, ongeveer 300 duizend andere als tweede taal. Dat maakt Wels na Gaelisch (Iers) de meest gesproken Keltische taal.

Helaas word Wels steeds minder gesproken. Slechts 25 procent van de inwoners van Wales spreekt de taal vloeiend. Maar er zijn verschillende initiatieven om de taal in stand gehouden en weer populairder te maken. Door een recente wetswijziging bijvoorbeeld, die alle jongeren tot de leeftijd van 16 verplicht het te leren als ze op school zitten in Wales. Wels heeft de status van enige andere erkende taal binnen Groot-Brittanni\u00eb, naast het Engels.<\/a>
