The Klik! Animation Festival 2016 recap.

Last week we visited the Klik! Animation Festival, at the Amsterdam EYE, along with tens of thousands of visitors. The festival was packed with masterclasses, talks, premières, awards and workshops.

As official partner we had the honour to crown the Best Voice in a Commissioned Animation winner; premiered our new explainer animation; and, hosted a panel discussion with industry experts about directing voice overs.

First things first, here’s how we judged the contenders for the Best Voice in a Commissioned Animation award.

We created a professional jury panel with three of our most experienced voice talents, a valued customer (Jerry, from in60seconds) and our own senior casting director, Koen.

The judges had no easy task, since all the contenders submitted high-end animations. La Mer, from Estee Lauder for example, presented a beautiful animation by Ryan Mack. The voice actor really sets the scene in this one:

5th Place: La Mer for @EsteeLauder

Most of the animations that we saw had a high level of detail in them. The attention to detail in the following video from Aardman Animations, in which they revealed their new logo, are very nicely done and funny too. They show amazing technique, as well as inspiring a good laugh:

4th Place: Introducing Nathan Love – by @AardmanAnimations

The next animation by Slack really proved they know how to breathe life into an animation. This impressive short shows all sorts of animation techniques, a strong story and provides loads of entertainment. Don’t forget to watch the bloopers!

3rd Place – Animals by @Slack

Now, this animation won all sorts of awards, it would’ve almost been silly not to mention it.  There are good jokes in it, impressive animation skills and a message that leaves you craving more!

2nd Place: – More Stuff – @BlueZooAnimation

Still, there can only be one winner. From our perspective there was one that really stood out. We crowned this animation the winner because the voice acting is incredibly lifelike and varied. You can hear that the voice actor really takes the animation to an even higher level. Take note of all the cool things that are happening in the background. The winner of the award for Best Voice goes to … Seed Matters by Buck!

Just before the award ceremony, we hosted a workshop in the form of a panel discussion. We wanted to give animators tips on directing voice talent for their animations. It was an interesting discussion between two experienced voice talents, an animator, and an audio designer; all with very different perspectives. It was great to see how the audience interacted as well. We are still busy editing, but here is a teaser to get you going:

At the end of the workshop we premiered our own explainer video. What better place to screen our own animation than at Klik!?

Here it is: our brand new explainer video!
