THE FRENCH LANGUAGE
French is a language that originates from the Roman Empire, as are Italian, Spanish, to name but a few. French is said to be spoken by about 110 million people as a mother tongue and another 190 million as a second language. French is an official language in 29 countries and, according to the European Union, 26% of the Union as a whole speaks French. Languages spoken in countries surrounding France are Flemish, Spanish and German.
French has many different dialects. In Europe, for example, there is Belgian French and Swiss French. In Canada, French is an official language in addition to English; the two main French dialects in Canada are Quebec French and Acadian French.
