Which animation and film festivals in 2020 do take place?

You can’t have missed out on the fact that we’ve been sitting at home the last couple of months because of a certain virus. One of the things that I personally miss a lot, is inspiration. Inspiration from animation and film festivals for example. Luckily there are a couple of festivals that actually do take place this year. Most of them online. We’ve made an overview of 10 top animation and film festivals that are planned (or already took place) for 2020 and their highlights.

Adobe Stock Film Fest (June 15th)

This year Adobe organised a very first edition of Adobe Stock Film Fest. A festival to show that creativity never stops, not even if you are stuck at home. They’ve asked 13 filmmakers from across the globe to make a film within 5 days without using a camera. What they did get was unlimited access to the Stock Database, Premiere Pro and the Epidemic Sound library. The results are 13 powerful short films that show the power of human creativity.

Annecy International Film Festival (June 15th – 30th)

The roots of this festival go way back to 1960. This is when the first filmmakers joined to show each-other special movies. It isn’t until 1998 that this festival became an annual event. You can find the most creative animations at this festival. Animations made completely out of drawings or sculptured out of clay. Apart from all the films you can check out, there are also interesting keynotes by world class animators.

Best of all, the event takes place in the beautiful natural surroundings of Annecy.

Encounters Film Festival (September 18th – October 11th)

From Annecy we travel to Bristol in the United Kingdom to attend the Encounters Film Festival. It’s not only film and animation that is shown here. There’s a lot of attention for Virtual Reality and 360-degree video. Be part of all kinds of Q&As, Masterclasses and workshops. Never a boring moment at the Encounters festival. Are there any prizes to win you think? Of course! If you win an award at Encounters, you might also get selected for the Academy Awards, BAFTA awards, BIFA awards and European Film Awards.

Sitges Film Festival (October 8th – 18th)

Many call this festival the number one festival to go to for Fantasy and Horror films. So if you like to be scared or you want to dream of into another universe, this is the place to be. The festival origins in 1968 and is organised annually at the beginning of October just outside of Barcelona. This year’s edition just wrapped up, but we still want to show you the Best Feature Length Film winner of 2020:

Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival (October 14th – 18th)

As you might’ve picked up from the name, this festival focusses on underground film and music. It is an annual festival in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the spot for small independent artists to get a chance to show their work to the big audience. Because this festival takes place in different venues all over the city, they had strict corona regulations this year.

Ontario International Film Festival (October 16th – 23rd)

A brand new festival. This will be the first edition of the Ontario International Film Festival and it will take place in Toronto, Canada. This festival offers independent filmmakers from different cultures the opportunity to get acquainted with the film industry, get updated on the latest in’s and out’s and to show themselves to the world. The first edition will be a complete virtual edition.

Fun fact is that Jane, one of the voices with Voicebooking, did the voiceover for this selected film:

DOK Leipzig (October 26th – November 1st)

Documentaries and animations, that’s what DOK Leipzig is all about. The festival focusses on tolerance, freedom of speech and human dignity. That’s why you shouldn’t be surprised that there are a lot of debates in between films. The artistic signature of the filmmaker is one of the big things at the festival

At the previous editions the films were showed in multiple cinemas and venues all over town. But because of corona this year’s festival will be completely online.

Raindance (October 28th – November 7th)

In the heart of London, you will find the 27th edition of the Raindance festival. Each year the festival draws about 16.000 visitors of which 500 professionals from the film industry. Besides films, they offer coursed and masterclasses and a lot of nice awards. The award winners for short film will be automatically qualified for the Oscars and the BAFTA awards.

Geneva International Film Festival (November 6th – 15th)

GIFF is known a place where different disciplines and genres come together. A place to experiment, party together and enjoy films, tv series and digital art. The festival wants to contribute to the Swiss and international digital industry. The event will take place like it did in previous editions, but there are strict corona regulations.

Cinanima (November 9th – 15th)

Running for 43 years now and known to be one of the biggest animation events. Espinho, Portugal is the place to be for visitors of Cinanima. Winner of the Grand Prize is automatically placed on the shortlist to win an Oscar for Best Animation Short Film. It’s pretty clear that you want to show your face and your work here being an animator. Besides animations Cinanima also offers exhibitions, workshops and other performances.
